How to Check Departure Times on Your Plane Ticket

Written by Ganjar

Checking the departure and arrival times on your ticket is crucial before you head to the airport. By knowing your departure time, you can plan the perfect time to leave for the airport to avoid being late.

It's just as important to know the arrival time, especially if someone is picking you up. This information lets you inform them precisely when to be at the airport to meet you.

Luckily, finding out your flight's departure and arrival times is straightforward if you have your ticket handy. Here’s how you can check:

1. Access Your Flight Ticket

Start by locating your plane ticket. If you bought your ticket through a travel agency or a similar offline method, you likely have a physical ticket.

If you booked your flight online, check the email used during the booking. Your ticket might be attached to an email. Open this email and download the ticket if it's attached.

Alternatively, you can check the ticket on the booking app or website you used. You can view your ticket directly in the app or download it as a PDF.

2. Locate Departure and Arrival Information

Once you have your flight ticket ready, check for the sections labeled “Departure Time” and “Arrival Time” to know when your flight leaves and lands.

These times are typically listed along with the airport codes for your departure and destination. For instance, in the example above, the departure airport code is SIN (Singapore) and the arrival airport code is KUL (Kuala Lumpur).

If the ticket doesn’t clearly list the departure and arrival times, the airport codes can still be useful. Just look for the times next to these codes to figure out when your flight departs and arrives.

3. Be Aware of Time Zones

The times shown on your airplane ticket are based on the local time zones of the respective airports. This means the departure time is set to the local time at the airport from which you are leaving, and the arrival time is based on the local time at your destination airport.

For example, if you are flying out of Jakarta, the departure time will be in Western Indonesia Time (WIB). If you're heading to Tokyo, the arrival time will be in Japanese Standard Time (JST).

Always keep these time zones in mind, as there can be substantial differences in time between your departure and arrival locations.

4. Pay Attention to Your Departure Day

Besides keeping an eye on your flight times, it’s just as important to pay close attention to the day of departure. Many people miss their flights because they get the day wrong, especially when it's an early morning flight.

Typically, the day and date of departure will be shown together, and the same goes for the day and date of arrival. Both are listed according to the local time of the departure and arrival airports.

Once you've followed the four steps above, you'll know exactly when your plane is leaving from the departure airport and when it will arrive at your destination. Keep in mind that the departure time on your ticket is different from the time on your boarding pass.

The time on your ticket is when the plane is scheduled to start moving from the gate, not when you need to be on board.

On the other hand, the time on your boarding pass is when passengers should start getting on the plane. Boarding usually begins 30 to 60 minutes before the time shown on the ticket.

The reason for this difference is that boarding can take some time, so airlines plan a gap between boarding and takeoff to make sure everyone gets on board safely.

Before takeoff, the crew also needs to complete some checks, such as making sure passengers are seated and running through safety procedures.
