Before traveling to Hong Kong, we researched restaurants to visit. To our delight, we discovered an Indonesian restaurant that offers specialties from all over Indonesia, from Padang Rice to Sundanese food.
We found out about this restaurant through a YouTube channel run by an Indonesian worker in Macau. He often shares tips and information about Hong Kong and Macau.
So, if you're planning a trip to Hong Kong and looking for dining options, this restaurant might be a great addition to your itinerary. Let's dive in!
The restaurant we visited is called Kampung Kita Indonesian Restaurant. It is located at G/F, 120 Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, and operates from 11 am to 10 pm.
To get here, you can get off at Mongkok MTR Station and take exit B2. It's just a 3-minute walk from there.
My husband and I ate here twice. On our first visit, we went in the evening. The restaurant had a warm atmosphere, but it felt crowded, possibly due to its location in the bustling Mongkok area.
The place isn't very large, but the seating is enough, with tables and chairs designed for groups of 4-6 people.
On our second visit, we came in the afternoon during the weekend. The place was packed! We were told there was a waiting list.
I considered eating somewhere else because I was so hungry, but then a staff member said that we could share a table. We didn't mind, so we stayed and ate there.
All the staff are Indonesian, and the music playing was a mix of Indonesian songs and folk tunes, making us feel right at home.
Alright, let's talk about the menu. Honestly, there are so many options that it's overwhelming! As the name suggests, the food here is all Indonesian cuisine.
It's not just for Indonesian tourists or locals but also for Indonesians living abroad who miss the taste of home.
The menu includes a variety of snacks like Ayam Crispy, Tahu Gejrot Cirebon, Peyek Jamur, Martabak Telur, Papaya Salad, and more.
For main courses, they offer Nasi Padang, Nasi Rendang, Grilled Chicken Rice, Hainanese Rice, Nasi Gurame, and various types of Satay. Don't worry, there are plenty of vegetarian options too. It genuinely feels like any Indonesian dish you want is available!
In addition to the food, the drink selection is also diverse. They have Es Cendol, Es Cingcau, and Candil. You're guaranteed to leave feeling full!
With many options available, we picked some familiar dishes. Here’s what we had:
First, I chose Mie Goreng Indonesia, prepared just like the street vendors back home. The noodles were stir-fried with various vegetables including carrots, cabbage, and spring onions, topped with scrambled eggs and chicken pieces.
They also came with tomatoes and cucumber as garnish, along with crackers and a side of chili sauce.
While the portion was generous and the flavor authentically Indonesian (thanks to the Indonesian chef!), the noodles were a bit too firm for my taste. However, I still really enjoyed it.
We ordered Lontong Cap Go Meh twice—once on each visit! As someone from Bandung, I can confidently say it tastes as good as, if not better than, what we have back home.
The soup was thick, richly spiced, and wonderfully savory. The rice cakes were perfectly cooked, complemented by super tender beef pieces, making it easy to eat.
This dish was a balanced meal with carbs, protein from meat and eggs, and a variety of vegetables like corn, beans, pumpkin, and bitter bean. Topped with sambal, crackers, and fried onions, this satisfying meal cost HKD 69 or about 8.84 USD.
My husband ordered Nasi Padang for lunch. Each portion came with rice, green chili sauce, cassava leaves, anchovy and tempe balado, jackfruit, balado eggs, and rendang.
Priced at HKD 69, its taste rivaled that of the Padang dishes we often find back home. Ideal for Indonesians abroad missing local flavors or locals eager to try authentic Indonesian cuisine.
The staff revealed that the herbs and spices are sourced directly from Indonesia, which explains the dish's superb taste.
Lastly, at my husband’s request, we had Es Cingcau. It included jelly, brown sugar, full cream milk, and ice cubes—a sweet treat reminiscent of Bandung! Priced at HKD 29, about 3,72 USD.
Overall, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Resto Kampung Kita. The food was delicious and the service was friendly.
If you’re planning a visit to Hong Kong, hopefully, this review helps you choose where to dine. See you in the next travel article!
