When my husband and I went to Hong Kong, we had the chance to explore several street markets, also known as flea markets.
At these markets, you can find a variety of shops selling clothes, jewelry (yes, they sell jewelry at street markets), electronics, souvenirs, and toys. It's a lot of fun!
These markets are always bustling with visitors, so be prepared for some crowding when you're browsing. It's not just tourists, but locals too!
In this article, I'll share the street markets we visited. I hope this is useful for those planning a trip to Hong Kong. Read on to find out more!
First up is the Ladies Market, one of the most popular street markets in Hong Kong. Here, you can find plenty of affordable fashion items.
This open-air market is located on Tung Choi Street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. The easiest way to get here is by MTR. You can get off at Mongkok MTR Station, take exit E2 or E3, and then walk to Tung Choi Street.
Besides fashion items, you can also find souvenirs, t-shirts, bags in various styles, accessories, toys, and more.
Despite its name, Ladies Market isn't just for women. There are plenty of items for men and children too. If you're looking for a wide range of inexpensive items, check out Ladies Market. It's great for souvenirs!
The market operates from 12pm to 11pm. It's best to visit in the afternoon or evening when all the stalls are open.
Calling all sneaker lovers! In Hong Kong, there's an area dedicated to selling sportswear, including sneakers.
Fa Yuen, also known as Sneaker Street, has been around since the 1980s. Interestingly, it used to be known for its flower markets!
However, over time, it transformed into a hub for affordable fashion and footwear. Here, you can find sneakers of various brands, along with hats, sportswear, watches, and more.
As the name suggests, this market is located on Fa Yuen Street, stretching from Mongkok MTR Station to Prince Edward Road. It operates from 10am to midnight.
Apliu Street Market is a well-known flea market in the Sham Shui Po district of Kowloon, Hong Kong. Conveniently, this market was close to our hostel, so we visited it often!
Apliu is famous for selling electronic goods, including cell phones, tablets, cameras, radios, and accessories. You can also find second-hand and vintage items, so this place is popular for bartering too.
After World War II, Apliu was a place where people sold military equipment. Now, it's a bustling market for electronics and even spare parts!
The market is located at 121 Kweilin St, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. You can take the MTR and get off at Sham Shui Po station to get here. It operates from 10am to midnight.
Lastly, my husband and I visited Toy Street Market. If you're looking for a wide range of toys, this is the place for you.
It sells everything related to toys, like Barbie dolls, Legos, board games, and more. Locals call it the 'Toy Market'.
Besides toys, there are also stalls selling stationery, clothes, and souvenirs. So, it's perfect even if you're not looking for toys. Interestingly, when we were there on the eve of Gong Xi Fa Cai, all the stalls were decorated in red and selling Chinese New Year items!
If you want to visit, the address is 1 Tai Yuen Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The market operates from 11am to 7pm.
Those were the four street markets we visited in Hong Kong. It was a lot of fun because we got to see another side of Hong Kong.
Apart from the towering buildings, they also preserve their culture with street markets. This can be a great alternative to malls or department stores. So, which one do you want to visit?
