Can You Leave the Airport During a Layover? Here’s The Answer!

Written by Ganjar

Usually, when we're on a layover, we get off our plane and wait inside the airport for our next flight. But sometimes, airports can be pretty boring with not much to do. This makes us wonder if we can step outside the airport for a while.

A common question is whether we can leave the airport during a layover. After all, it might be a chance to check out a new city or country for a short time before our next flight.

The short answer is YES, you can leave the airport during a layover. But, there are some important things to think about first. If you don't consider these, you might not be able to leave, or it might not be a good idea to.

So, what should you think about?

1. How Long is Your Layover?

First, think about how long your layover is. If it's more than 5 hours, you probably have enough time to leave the airport. But, if it's less than 5 hours, it's better to stay put.

Why more than 5 hours? Because leaving and coming back to the airport takes time. For international flights, you have to go through immigration and customs. These can take a while, especially if there are long lines.

Then, when you come back to the airport, you have to do all these checks again, like security and immigration. This all adds up.

So, a layover of at least 5 hours is a good minimum. If it's only 3 hours, 2 hours, or even 1 hour, you won't have enough time for all these processes, and you might risk missing your next flight.

2. Visa Requirements

For domestic layovers, things are usually simpler because you don't need to deal with immigration when you leave and re-enter the airport. But, for international trips, it's a different story. You need to know about the country's visa rules.

Some countries let passengers transit without a visa. But, if you want to leave the airport, you might need a visitor visa, just like other tourists.

It's important to check the visa rules of the country you're transiting through ahead of time. Find out if you need a visa to step out of the airport. If you need a visa that you don't have, then it's best to stay in the airport.

Sometimes, countries offer visas on arrival or special transit visas. If that's the case, you might think about getting one of these visas.

3. Where is The Airport?

Another thing to consider is where the airport is located – is it near or far from the city center? If it's far, you'll spend a lot of time and money just to get to the city.

Take Narita Airport near Tokyo, for instance. It's quite far from central Tokyo – about an hour's travel. So, you'll need a longer layover if you want to visit the city.

On the other hand, Haneda Airport is much closer to Tokyo's center, just about 20 minutes away. If you're laying over here, you'll have more time to explore the city.

4. Your Luggage

When you're on a layover, two things can happen with your luggage. Either it gets sent straight to your next flight, or you need to pick it up and check it in again.

If your bags are transferred for you, it's easier to leave the airport since you don't have to worry about them. But if you need to collect your luggage, think carefully about what to do.

Carrying lots of bags in and out of the airport is a hassle. You might leave them at the airport, but that usually costs money.

5. Rules of the Airline and Airport

Finally, whether you can leave the airport or not might depend on the rules set by your airline and the airport. Even if you have a long layover, they might not allow you to leave.

If that's the case, you just have to follow their rules. They might have security reasons or other concerns.

To sum up, deciding to leave the airport during a layover depends on these factors. The most important thing is not to miss your next flight, especially since missing a flight on purpose (called "skiplagging") can cause problems.
