Can You Take Deodorant on a Plane?

Written by Ganjar

Deodorant is a must-have item for many people on vacation. Often, we have a favorite deodorant that we prefer not to switch from, even when traveling.

So, is it okay to bring deodorant on a plane? The answer is yes. Many people pack deodorant in their checked luggage, planning to use it only when they reach their destination.

However, some passengers also carry it in their cabin baggage to use during the flight. You can take it along as long as you follow the flight's rules, especially if your deodorant is classified as a LAG.

Is Deodorant a LAG?

LAG stands for Liquid, Aerosol, and Gel. Items in the LAG category have quantity limits on planes. Also, LAG packaging must meet aviation standards.

There are 5 common types of deodorant. Among these, some are considered LAGs, while others are not. Let's look at each type of deodorant:

1. Roll-on Deodorant

Roll-on deodorant is a popular choice. It has a roller ball that spreads the liquid inside the bottle onto the underarm area. Since it contains liquid, this type of deodorant is considered a LAG.

2. Deodorant Stick

Another option is the solid deodorant stick. It usually comes in a package like roll-on deodorants and is applied directly to the armpits. Its texture is wax-like, wearing down slowly with each use.

There are also deodorant sticks made from alum or crystal. These need to be moistened before use. But, regardless of the material, stick deodorants are not considered LAGs due to their solid form.

3. Gel Deodorant

Gel deodorant often comes in packaging similar to roll-on deodorant. However, instead of liquid, it contains a gel. This means gel deodorant also falls into the LAG category.

4. Deodorant Cream

Deodorant cream has a creamy and sticky texture, much like lotion. It's usually applied with hands or a special tool. Cream deodorants are classified as LAGs as well.

4. Deodorant Spray

Deodorant spray is used by spraying it onto the armpit area. It's seen as more hygienic due to no direct skin contact. Since it uses aerosols, spray deodorants are included in the LAG category.

How to Carry Deodorant in Cabin Baggage

From our previous discussion, we know that roll-on, gel, cream, and spray deodorants are considered LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels). Stick deodorant, however, is not a LAG.

Since stick deodorants aren't LAGs, you can bring them into the plane's cabin without restrictions. The TSA website states there's no limit on size or specific packaging requirements for these in cabin baggage.

The situation is different for the other four types of deodorant that are LAGs. They can only be taken into the cabin if the container is no larger than 100ml or 3.4 ounces.

What if the container is bigger than 100ml but not full? It's still not allowed in the cabin. Security checks focus on the container size, not the amount of product inside.

To take these deodorants in the cabin, you must place them in a clear, sealable bag. If you have other LAG items, they should all be in the same bag.

Place this bag in an easily accessible part of your carry-on luggage. This makes it easier to take out for airport security checks.

What about bringing deodorant in checked baggage? There's no size limit for deodorants, whether they're LAGs or not, in checked luggage.

You can pack any size deodorant in checked bags. There aren't specific rules for packaging, but it's important to pack them securely to prevent spills or breakage during the journey.

That's the information about carrying deodorant on flights. Note that these rules might not apply to all flights, as some airports and airlines could have different regulations regarding deodorants.

To be sure, it's best to check with the airport or airline you're flying with before your trip.
