How to Use AirPods & Bluetooth Headset on a Plane

Written by Ganjar

Gone are the days of wired headsets. We've now shifted to cordless headsets like AirPods or TWS. These wireless devices are not only comfortable but also practical and easy to carry around.

These headsets work using Bluetooth technology, connecting to devices like smartphones for music playback. This leads to a common question: Can we use these headsets on a plane?

When flying, we're told to switch our smartphones to airplane mode. This mode's main purpose is to minimize interference with the aircraft's communication signals, enhancing safety during the flight.

Activating airplane mode disables some of the phone's network connections, including Bluetooth. When Bluetooth is off, our phone can't connect to a Bluetooth headset.

Does this mean we can't use Bluetooth headsets on planes? Don't worry, as aviation authorities have now permitted the use of headsets and other Bluetooth-connected devices on planes.

So, how can we use Bluetooth devices when our smartphones are in airplane mode? No need to worry. In this article, I'll guide you through using a Bluetooth headset while your phone is in airplane mode. Here are the steps:

1. Activate Airplane Mode

The first thing to do is turn on airplane mode. It's best to do this when the plane is about to take off. Flight attendants usually ask everyone to either switch off their phones or activate airplane mode at this time.

You can find airplane mode in the Settings menu or the Quick Panel, depending on your phone. When it's on, all wireless connections on your phone, like cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, will be disabled.

The takeoff process often lasts about 10 minutes until the plane is safely in the air. You'll know it's safe when the seatbelt sign turns off. During this time, we should stay seated and not do anything else.

2. Activate Bluetooth

Once the seatbelt light is off, you're free to do other things, including listening to music with a Bluetooth headset. To do this, first turn on the Bluetooth.

You can switch on Bluetooth in the Settings menu or Quick Panel. But make sure to leave airplane mode on, so your phone stays in that mode.

Some phones will ask if you want to keep Bluetooth on when you turn on airplane mode. If you say yes, then Bluetooth will stay on the next time you use airplane mode.

By the way, you can also use Wi-Fi in airplane mode now. So, if your plane has Wi-Fi, you can connect to the internet.

3. Connect the Bluetooth Headset

If Bluetooth is on, you can connect it to your headset. If they've been connected before, they might connect automatically.

If it's your first time connecting them, follow the instructions in your headset's manual to pair them.

Once connected, you can start listening to your favorite songs on apps like Spotify or Apple Music. Speaking of Spotify, if you want to use it in airplane mode, check out this article:

So, those are the steps to use Bluetooth headsets like AirPods and TWS on a plane. Now, there's no need to worry about getting bored on your flight, as you can enjoy music throughout your journey.
