Are you planning a trip to Singapore? If so, make sure to explore Emerald Hill, an area known for its beautiful rows of Peranakan houses or shophouses, which have become popular photo spots for both tourists and locals.
The Peranakan community—particularly the Chinese Peranakans, also known as Baba-Nyonya—descended from Chinese merchants who married local women, such as Malays or Javanese. This unique culture flourished in the Straits of Malacca region, including Singapore.
While you can find Peranakan houses in various parts of Singapore, Emerald Hill stands out as one of the most photogenic. Located just off Orchard Road, this area blends rich history with architectural beauty.

According to the information displayed on-site, Emerald Hill was once a nutmeg plantation established in 1837 by William Cuppage, a postal officer.
Unfortunately, the nutmeg trees were later hit by disease and failed to yield a harvest, making the plantation unprofitable.
Around 1900, the land was sold to two businessmen, Seah Eng Kiat and Seah Boon Kang, who divided it into smaller plots and began building terraced houses and shophouses.

Over time, Emerald Hill evolved into an upscale neighborhood, home to many wealthy Peranakan families. These families built their homes in a distinct architectural style featuring colorful facades, intricate tilework, and wood carvings on doors and windows.
The carvings often incorporate a mix of European, Chinese, and Malay influences—reflecting the multicultural roots of the Peranakan identity. Personally, I think this blend of styles is what makes the houses so visually stunning, which is why they're such popular backdrops for photos.

Emerald Hill is conveniently located right across from Orchard Gateway. The easiest way to get there is by MRT:
Take the MRT to Somerset Station (NS23) and exit via Exit C. From there, follow the signs to Orchard Gateway, then simply cross the road and walk for about 3 to 5 minutes.
